Life Of A Car Guy

Introducing, The Silver Bullet!

A lot of my car experiences early in my life came from my friends growing up during high school and college. My friend from my previous blog who trashed my dads Honda was one of the main ones I got to ride with on various occasions. There was one night where he got to drive his dad’s brand new 1994 Audi A6 Quattro from one of our high school football games in Roanoke, VA. Now, let me tell you… back then seeing one of these babies was a shear blessing, but to actually ride shotgun in one, was absolutely heaven on earth. It was a beautiful bright silver with black interior. It had a factory CD deck with absolutely crisp sounding speaking, heavy on the base. The wheels were pure premium allow delight and the windows had a really nice deep tint, but street legal, barely. When my friend revved that thing up, man, you thought you were gonna take off straight into the air. One of the things I learned about those Audis back then were that the engines were extremely powerful, efficient and pretty quiet even at the lower RPMs. And the interior, my God… sweet pure velvet-pressed perfection.

Ok so I set the visual detail pretty heavy, so now let’s talk about the ride home. After the game, which was held across town from where we lived, my friend decided we were gonna take the highway home. Now the highway in Roanoke city, I581, actually runs through the middle of the entire city from off I81 exit all the way through into several nearby counties. And everybody knows the speed limit from any given point on that highway DOES NOT go above 55mph. My friend and I especially knew this as well. But tonight, unbeknownst to me, was to be a different outcome altogether.

Leaving the game and entering the highway onto the onramp off of Wonju street in SW Roanoke, we proceed to merge on and make our way down the road. Now for those of you who have never been to Roanoke, VA, it is a wonderful, quaint little city. Barely a city in its size and population, you can get anywhere in Roanoke within 20-30 minutes, even with bad traffic. We were about to get where we needed to go much faster than that. My friend looked over at me and said, “you wanna see what she can do?” I said, “Hell yeah!” LOL.

My friend instantly put his foot to the pedal and that bad boy took off! We were going around a turn not too far away from Downtown Roanoke, underneath a bridge that linked Roanoke to Vinton VA, which literally was not even a quarter of a mile away. I looked over at the speedometer while gripping my handle above my head and saw that we exceeded 100mph within seemingly a few seconds! My eyes got big quick! I had no idea we were even going that fast despite feeling a sudden rush of speed getting up. I had never ridden or driven a car at that point where I exceeded even 75 mph, let alone hitting the century mark. As soon as we saw that together, my friend backed off of it and we gave each other a high five in triumph! I tried my best not to let on I was nervous as hell, but I couldn’t tell if he knew I was shook or not. It wasn’t too long after he came down from hitting triple figures that we exited off the highway and headed on home, but man, let me tell you, as some of you may know, once you get a taste of a fast-moving car, it’s hard to come down from that. From that day forward, my friend called that Audi his Silver Bullet, and it was every bit as advertised, at least in our minds. 😊

Figure I should put this in just in case, guys. Y’all be safe out here…
